Sakkari has won 1 WTA title from 2 finals she has contested in. Before completely shifting to the WTA tour, she played on the ITF circuit winning 7 titles from 17 finals she contested in. She also had 5 titles from 9 finals in the ITF Doubles tournaments. She reached the semi-finals of the 2021 French Open, her best Grand Slam result to date.

She broke into the WTA Top-100 rankings in her first season on the WTA tour and has improved her rank every season reaching career high-rank of World No. 17 in May 2021.

Who are Maria Sakkari’s parents?

Maria was born on 25 July 1995 to Konstantinos Sakkaris and mother and former tennis player Angeliki Kanellopoulou in Athens, Greece. Angeliki reached the quarter-finals of the 1984 Summer Olympics and had 2 titles on the ITF circuit. She also made it to the 3rd round of the French Open on two occasions. Her highest career ranking was World No. 43.

Both of her parents supported her in tennis and were the ones who introduced her to the sport when Maria was 6 years old and later persuaded her to move to Barcelona for better training prospects when she was 18 years old. Neither of her parents became her coach but are often spotted in the players’ box.

Maria has had a wonderful 2021 season reaching the semi-finals in 4 competitions. She also made it to the quarter-finals of the 2021 US Open.
