Alexander Volkanovski’s welterweight journey
Volkanovski started his career in the Welterweight division when he fought against Gerhard Voigt in Revolution Promotions: Revolution at the Roxy in 2012. He managed to win his first championship gold in his very second match where he won the Cage Conquest Welterweight Championship. Volkanovski went on to win four out of five matches in this weight class and registered the first loss of his career.
In the meantime ‘The Great‘ managed to win another championship in Roshambo MMA. His welterweight journey spanned over two years from 2012-13 and then decided to move up the weights to compete in the lightweight division.
Alexander Volkanovski’s Lightweight Journey
Volkanovski made his lightweight debut against Greg Atzori on Feb 1, 2014, in Roshambo MMA 2. ‘The Great’ not only emerged victorious but also won the Roshambo MMA lightweight Championship. He then dropped weight to compete in Featherweight. But, he did return to the Lightweight division on three separate occasions.
“The Great” also managed to add a Wollongong Wars Lightweight championship to his list of accolades. Volkanovski has fought a total of five matches in this division having won all five of them. Interestingly, he also made his UFC debut in this division, when he went one-on-one against Yusuke Kasuya at UFC fight night on November 16, 2016.
In the UFC, Volkonovski also challenged Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title to become a double champion already having secured the featherweight title. Unfortunately, he lost on both occasions.
Alexander Volkanovski ‘s featherweight journey
Volkanovski first competed in the featherweight division during his time at the Australian fighting championship. The featherweight division is where Volkanovski’s career reached new heights. Having won three Featherweight titles in three different promotions, he conquered the UFC Featherweightweight Championship at UFC 245 defeating Max Halloway.
The most noticeable among them is defeating Max Halloway three times for the Championship. Volkanovski was without a doubt the most dominant Featherweight champion the UFC has come across in years. Unfortunately, he lost his title Ilia Topuria at UFC 298.
Apart from this, Volkanovski has also competed in a catchweight bout in 2017 at UFC Fight Night against Shane Young. The Aussie has been selected as the backup fighter for Charles Oliveira vs. Islam Makahachev at UFC 280.
